NOORDKAPPERSNOT (jellyfish)

NOORDAKPPERSNOT. (aqueora forskalea/ local jellyfish)

2007, lightjet photographic print, 59.4 X 84cm

Marine Drive, Milnerton. (Gas Tanks)

In modern Afrikaans the word ( Northern Right whale) is spelt Noordkapper, and at one time Western Province fishermen referred to whalebone as ‘noordkapperbaard’. ‘Noordkapperolie’ was whale-oil and jellyfishes were called ‘noordkappersnot’, a name said to be heard mostly in the Riversdale district of the southern cape.
